Supported in 2007
Based in Surrey
The Pitstop is a homeless charity based in Leatherhead, Surrey. Michael Varah supported the hugely important work of this drop-in centre that gives those who find themselves homeless somewhere to meet others, to talk or to have a free cup of tea, snack or lunch. Knowing that Michael was inspired by this place, which is a source of comfort to many homeless in Surrey, the MVMF donated £5,000 to The Pitstop in 2007 in order to help with its running costs.
The Pitstop is open Monday to Friday and offers an alcohol and drug free environment for people to spend time in; the only thing it asks of its visitors is that they treat the place and other people with respect. For those with a particular problem, there is an advocate on site to help them access the necessary people or services, to speak up for them or just to help them fill in forms or letters.
Building on this support, the MVMF also collaborated to set up Pitstop Wanderers FC, a football team for the homeless. NB PLEASE LINK THIS ACROSS
