Through contact with a local youth worker, the MVMF was alerted to the challenges faced by the local community in Merstham. A sports initiative that would engage young teenagers in the area – many of them disaffected or disadvantaged – was required and so the MVMF worked with trained coach, Jason Benjamin, to set up Fitness Forumz Boxercise sessions as a solution. We stepped in to assist with the purchase of Boxercise equipment and funded Jason and an assistant coach to ensure that the programme could get started on Friday nights, a time when previously these young people had been out roaming the streets.
By offering Boxercise classes to 11 to 14 year olds, Jason helped keep these teenagers off the streets in one of Surrey’s highest areas of deprivation. We are working with him to embed the programme into Merstham and the neighbouring area.
